This name derives from a very particular natural phenomenon that has occurred every year since ancient times, when in the first days of September the males of the winged ants migrate from central Europe in swarms to this peak to perform their nuptial flight. Once mated, the ants go to die by the hundreds of thousands in the area of the sanctuary. According to tradition, the culmination of this phenomenon can be observed on 8 September, which has become the day of celebration at the sanctuary, although the exact date may vary depending on weather conditions. The importance of the sanctuary is also due to its privileged position that allows one to enjoy an amazing panorama and to the presence of the hermit's cave, dug into the rock and inhabited in the 16th century by a hermit belonging to the Jesuit order.
