Korcula is also one of the most densely wooded islands in the Adriatic.The town of Korcula is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean with 13th, 14th and 15th century city walls built around the old town centre. The town was founded as early as the 10th century (Constantine Porphyrogenet). The regularity of its building plan is unique in the Mediterranean. The famous seafarer and merchant Marco Polo was born in Korcula in 1254. On the hill above Vela Luka lies Vela spilja - a famous archaeological site from the Stone Age, the finds of which can be seen in the local museum.
