A predominantly tourist centre in the Chianti region of Tuscany in the northern part of the province of Siena, it is historically linked to the history of Semifonte and Medici Florence. Developing after the destruction in 1202 of the ancient village of Semifonte, it gained importance for being located along the Strada Regia Romana, the road that connected Florence with Rome and of prime importance for trade and pilgrimages. Hence the presence of the Spedale dei Pellegrini (Pilgrims' Hospice) in 1365, still one of Barberino's most important tourist points. The town has maintained its medieval structure with its two entrance gates and elliptical shape. The sites of Semifonte and Sant'Appiano are the most interesting from an archaeological point of view.
